Lady Redhawks wrap up first semester with Miami Invite

The Redhawks hosted teams from across the nation for the yearly Miami Invitational.  The girls do a taper, which means they are rested and ready to swim fast.  This is a great half way point in the season to see if the girls can step it up and swim fast.  Invite is used to measure how much work is left to do before conference and also create a pressure racing atmosphere preparing for the end of the season.

Highlights from Day 1:

Junior Chelsey Bruington, sophomore Bekka Westrick and seniors Megan Brunn and Kelsey Vehr snagged the meets first win in the 800 freestyle relay.  The time was just 27 hundredths of a second off of an NCAA Division I Championship "B" cut.  Senior Miranda Kaltenborn led the RedHawks in the mile with a fourth-place finish in a time of 17:16.10.

Highlights from Day 2:

Winning six events on the night, the girls took the lead in the meet. Kelsey Vehr set a new meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke. Megan Brunn finished second with a time of 1:02.44.  Sophomore Leah Thornton took home two wins, one in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.24, and another in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.94.  Junior Chelsey Bruington won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.24. Bekka Westrick won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.23. The 400-yard medley relay team of Thornton, Vehr, Maegan O'Connor and Westrick also took first place.

Highlights from Day3:

The Redhawks easily won the meet with 2,604 points.  The girls proved they were ready to race even only half way through the season.  Miami started off the night with a victory in the 200 medley relay, recording a time of 1:42.21. Leah Thornton got her NCAA Divison I B cut in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.82.  Chelsey Bruington took sixth in the 500 freestyle.

RedHawks prepare for the Miami Invite

The RedHawks finished up their first semester duel swim meets last weekend with Kenyon.  The girls now prepare for the Miami Invite, which will take place December 1-4.  The Miami Invite is traditionally a half way point in the season for the swimmers.  Many girls will rest for the meet and try to swim top times of the season or even lifetime best times.  The meet acts as a challenge for the girls to prepare to race and swim fast.  The invite includes teams from around the country hosted at Miami's own Nixon Aquatic Center.  The RedHawks will be able to preview their best events before the conference meet hits in February.

Redhawks go 4-1

Miami RedHawk women take 1-2-3 in three events at Kenyon burying the Ladies 168-71.  Saturday’s meet in Gambier Ohio puts Miami up to a 4-1 season record. 

Miami’s  first 1-2-3 finish in the 50 freestyle set the pace for the meet.  Sophomore Bekka Westrick took Miami’s first place finish in the 50 free followed by sophomore Maddie Kete and freshmen Cynthia Donovon.  Sophomore Leah Thornton led the next 1-2-3 event in the 200 backstroke.  Thornton took first followed by sophomore Jenny Warmolts and senior Katherine Reinmann.  The 200 breaststroke added to the RedHawks dominance with senior Megan Brunn taking first followed by Kelsey Vehr and Stacie Clagg. 

Two Miami double event winners emerged from the meet, senior Miranda Kaltenborn and freshmen diver Nikki Craft.  Kaltenborn won both the 500 (5:07.23) freestyle and 1000 freestyle (10:25.69).  Craft took the one-meter (284.55) and the thee-meter (317.70) diving events. 

Miami also took first in the 200 freestyle with junior Chelsea Bruington clocking in 153.20.  Vehr won the 400 individual medley (4:31.76) and sophomore Maegan O’Connor won the 200 fly (2:03.94). 

The RedHawks also took first place in the two relay races, posting a time of 3:53.92 in the 400 medley and 3:33.06 in the 400 freestyle relay. 

Redhawks down the Eagles

Miami Redhawks had no problem beating conference rival Eastern Michigan.  The score at the end of Saturday the 6^th was 193.5 to 95.5.  Senior leader Megan Brunn was the star of the meet capturing three individual wins as well as the 200 medley relay.  Brunn won the 100 and 200 breast along with the 400 individual medley. 

Other multi event winners included sophomore Bekka Westrick winning the 50 and 100 freestyle, sophomore Leah Thronton won the 100 and 200 backstroke events, sophomore Maegan O’Connor placed first in the 100 and 500 butterfly as freshmen diver Nikki Craft took both diving events.  All in all the younger crowd of sophomores and freshmen are proving to be outstanding competitors.

This meet is a great test for the team every season as Eastern Michigan always is a contender for the conference meet champion.  For the lady redhawks to take so many first place wins, including the relays, really shows their depth and team character.
